But there's a catch. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is mine... for whatever the Neon sells for. Should I bite? I mean, there's no reason for me to have two cars, and she could get a lot more for the BMW than what the Neon's worth, so it's a good deal for me... but I don't wanna get rid of the Neon. It's too much fun, and I have a lot of memories invested in it.

You should most definitely have 2 cars. In fact I would not want to go back to just having one car. Gone are the Sunday's where I'm working on my car and realize i need a part that I can't order till Monday and worrying about getting to work the following day. It's also nice to be able to wash/clay one day, and be able to polish/wax tue following day without having to wash the car again.

I'm single and I share a driveway with others. It's unwise for me to have two cars, and I wouldn't really be able to afford the BMW without selling the Neon.

You'd rather have a Neon than a facelift E39 with a stick-shift? And at essentially no additional cost? ... o.O I think you may want to reconsider, sir.
Just think of the possibilities! :D

You can have more than one car. In fact i have 5 right now. (Also reflected in my username)

It's not a normal boring Neon, it's PMY with the good interior, the good snowflake wheels and almost all the options ticked. It's served me well for three years with less than $100 invested in parts, and with only 140k on the clock it's still got quite a few years left in it. The E39 has 235k on it and is gonna get expensive fast when things start to fail.

I'm single and I share a driveway with others. I really don't have a need or a place for two cars.

Im single and have to share driveway with my parents... lol just playing man. I have an addiction to Craigslist

Ahhh.... Yes, the 235K does make quite a difference! ... Keep the Neon! lol

But it's all highway miles. It looks and feels like a car with half the mileage.
Thus my dilemma.

In that case keep the neon. It'll be cheaper to maintain.

The 528i is more than just a ticking time bomb, It's a time bomb that's slowly exploding as we speak. Keep the Neon, Even though the BMW is more "exciting. "

Do it! E39's are pretty solid, the 528i is one of the best too. Lots going north of 200k. This could make for a great "beater".

Between 200k and 250k is when e39's start to have SERIOUS problems. Problems that will cost you more than the price of that neon. It's an awesome car but unless your ready to swap the engine, I might reconsider.

Sell the neon to a friend for $1. Profit.

Parents run a garage, I can pay wholesale prices for parts.

You have a choice between a BMW and a Neon? Seems like a no-brainer to me as long as the beemer is in half-decent shape. Just my opinion......

Personally, even though I'm the one of the biggest BMW fanatics you'll find, I'd stick with the Neon... Probably better to save up and buy the car you really want, rather than play ze German maintenance game. But, that's just my $0.02. If you're comfortable with the car, and you want an upgrade, go for it!

For my edification, what goes wrong? Suspension? Engine/transmission fail? Electronics? (I'm not that well versed on BMW's)
![]() 01/10/2015 at 23:11 |

Electronics for sure, but only lights indicating issues that aren't there, etc. things of that sort. Overheating really becomes the main problem, along with things in the engine just failing. This is not from personal experience, but a friend had a 02' e39 that he bought with about 200,000 miles on it. It was fine for the first 2 - 3000 miles, but after that, it basically was a snowball effect of bad things happening more and more. After seeing him go down in flames (not literally), I don't think I would touch an e39 (or any BMW for that matter) after 150,000 miles. Also, premium fuel ONLY!!!! Beamers just don't run well on anything else.

Also I forgot that the Traction control starts to fail as well. For him it wasn't great timing either, dead middle of last winter in NYC.
